ASM Press Release

11th April 2023

The nursing union - MUMN - has issued directives. Because of these directives a large number of operations were cancelled over the last three weeks. When asked whether he is aware of the suffering that patients are undergoing the President of MUMN replied that this was a stupid question and then decided to attack consultants' working practices to defend his strike.

MAM has pointed out that only a third of consultants are doing private practice. Before the nursing union directives, operation lists in theatre were never stopped or cancelled halfway because there were no consultants to do the surgery but because of MUMN instructions that discouraged nurses to continue working after 5pm.

Now with the the union’s directives the situation is even worse. Workers from all walks of life have a right to follow their union’s directives. However, they shoulder the responsibility of their actions and be aware of the inevitable collateral damage that will occur causing harm to patients whom we are privileged to be looking after.
